5 Awful Things That Happen When You Don’t Moisturize

Everyone knows moisturizers are important. And you’ve probably heard of it a couple of times already.

The concept isn’t just a hype. You actually do need to moisturize or you’ll end up with dry and dehydrated skin and that’s both uncomfortable and unpretty.

But, is that all there is to it? The answer is no and here are 5 more reasons why you shouldn’t skip your moisturizers.

1. It will make your acne worse

Dryness is one of the worst things that can happen to your acne-prone skin. When the skin thinks it’s dry, it will be forced to create more oil than necessary and that can cause more clogged pores and skin breakouts.

Apart from that, skin dryness can also accentuate your pimples, especially if you’re using a topical acne treatment.

If you are feeling fearful of using moisturizer on your acne-prone skin, pick one that’s lightweight and oil-free and you shouldn’t have any problems.

2. It leaves your skin vulnerable

When the skin is dry, it loses its barrier that protects it against infection and harsh environmental conditions. So, when you use products, like retinoids and salicylic acid, you end up with red and peeling skin.

3. Your makeup won’t look perfect

A hydrated skin makes a great base for makeup. If you skip your moisturizer, your foundation and concealer can end up clinging to your dry patches.

They will even sink into your fine lines and wrinkles, accentuating your problem areas.

4. You’ll get more wrinkles

When your skin is chronically dry, it triggers an inflammatory response that causes collagen to break down. As collagen decreases, your skin becomes less and less elastic and that’s when signs of premature skin aging happen.

5. You’ll itch like crazy

Itching is one of the most common symptoms of dry skin. It’s your skin’s way of telling you that something is off and you need to do something about it.

Now that we got those things out of the way, the question now is this: How often should you moisturize your face?

The short answer to that is twice a day, no matter what your skin type is.

You need to moisturize your face in the morning to protect as well as hydrate it. You’ll need to apply your creams at night to help your skin repair and rejuvenate as you sleep.

Ideally, you should apply your moisturizer after you’ve cleansed your face as water can be dehydrating. Apply it while your skin is damp as this will trap more moisture into your skin.

When applying, use a light hand. Going too heavy can actually cause the excess product to sit on top of your skin, suffocating it and triggering breakouts.

Don’t go more than a nickel-sized amount for your entire face. Moisturizers are concentrated so you don’t need to use too much of them.
